Wade Sahmel hangs on to take the first event of the year in Lake Charles The Texas Tour began the year in Lake Charles, the normal starting location. The weather would be very nice as is usual in southern Louisiana this time of year. Jeffrey Smith would take lead after the first round with a twelve under 24. Steve Tanton would be alone in second two stokes with most of the rest of the field between 27 and 30. The second round would see Wade Sahmel match Jeffrey’s 12 under and take over the lead at 21 under 51. His lead was tenuous however with Greg Simpson one stroke back, Tanton two strokes back and Smith, Lee Messinger, and Jimmy Clark all thee strokes back. Sahmel would shoot a four under over the front nine of the last round. Tanton fell well off the pace only shooting one under over the nine. Clark kept pace with a four under of his own. Simpson would fall two strokes behind with a 15 on the front, while Smith and Messinger would make up ground shooting five under and six under respectively. The first contender in would be Smith: a final nine holes of 14 put Jeffrey in at 27 under 81. The next contender clubhouse would be Simpson, a 13 over the back nine would put him in at 28 under 80 and forcing all contenders to shoot good or solid final nines. Sahmel would be next in; coming into the last hole he needed an ace to move into the lead. A nice center hole putt gave Sahmel the lead in clubhouse at 29 under 79. With Clark falling out contention early on over the last nine holes, the only competitor left to challenge was Messinger. He was on the sixteenth hole when Sahmel finished and he would need to cce the last three holes to tie. After making both the 16th and 17th, Messinger just needed the last hole to force a playoff, but a very poor putt, pushing it into an obstacle, resulted in a bogey and a third place tie with Smith. Sahmel would escape with a one stroke victory in the first event of year. State spots went to Sahmel and Simpson in medal play and Danny Tatum and Steve Armstrong in match play. Adam makes it a Sahmel sweep in Lake Charles In the amateur division Adam Sahmel and Mickey DeLucca would share the first round lead at 7 under 29. Lloyd Navarro Jr. held second alone two strokes back. Sahmel would blow the field away in the second round with a 10 under 26 giving him a two round total of 17 under 55 and a four stroke lead over Navarro Jr. A 12 on the front nine allowed Sahmel to cruise in with an 84 and a five stroke win. Navarro Jr. locked up second place by firing 13 on the front, finishing with an 89. A great final nine from Dave Blalock would give him a 92 and a third place. Ken Stanfill’s 96 would sneak into fourth. State spots went to Sahmel and Navarro Jr. in medal play and Blalock and Alan Sahmel in match play.
